A not for profit insurance firm has introducd an insurance scheme which offers vegetarians and egg eaters a reduced premium cheap critical illness insurance .

The offer, believed to be the first of its type, is being pioneered by Animal Friends Insurance (AFI). The company is offering vegetarians a 6 per cent lower priceon life cover premiums
The organisation claimed that veggies ought to pay a lower amount for the insurance cover, which pays out if the plan holder dies, because they were less likely to suffer from a range of very serious illnesses, including cancers.

Amanda Jude, a director at AFI, said that the risk of veggies being diagnosed with certain cancers is lowered by up to 40% and the danger of them suffering from heart disease is lowered by up to 32%, but despite this they have, until now, had to pay broadly the same insurance costs as people who eat meat.
She says that Animal Friends Insurance think that this is unfair and says the life organisations should recognise the concept that being a veggie can make have a big influence on life expectancy and reduce its charges accordingly.

A standard arrangement is also on the market for non-vegetarians. Both insurance policies are marketed by LV=, which prior, was known as Liverpool Victoria.

In common with standard life insurance policies, a range of things contribute to the cost of the premium including whether the applicant smokes, their age, sex and weight.

Currently, AFI is carrying the seven per cent reduction in price itself from the cash it gets from LV=. In the future, however, the business’s objective was to offer lower premiums on specialist policies. In making the offer the company is hoping to sign up enough vegetarians to make it worthwhile for LV= to underwrite another policy that takes the veggie diet into account.

Indeed there are significant savings to be had, a 38 year oldnon-smoker wanting £300,000 worth of insurance cover might potentially save £393.60 over a 20-year period.

Where serious illness insurance is concerned, AFI believes that life insurance companies should try to treat those that eat meat and non-meat eaters in a way that is similar to the way they approach those that don’t smoke and those that do. Perhaps others in the insurance industry will do the same.

It is thought that some executivesin the insurance industry are doubtful whether there is robust proof that veggies live longer, and how any life insuranec company could prove that applicants who had certified that they are veggies did not sometimes enjoy the odd lamb chop.

When it comes to smoking, the insurance company can refer to your GP’s patient records – if you do smoke it’s certainly likely that your GP will know. However, this is unlikely to apply when it comes to eating meat, an executive from the insurance industry commented.

But many veggetarians say that they are not worried about people falling off the vegetarian way of eating and suggested that once a veggie has become a veggie, they do not return to meat-eating, that is unlike smokers who tend to drift out and back again into their old smoking ways.

Just recently I was trawling through my own personal myspace page, which incidentally I don’t use that often. I noticed that I had a few new friend requests. On inspection there where the few obvious spammers and a few actual people, but, there was one particular bands music profile which stuck out! That band where called The Vouch. I thought at first, what a cool name, so I accepted the add. Apparantly they are the best band in the world? The Vouch… A few weeks passed and I began using myspace page a little more, to stay in touch with friends. I then began noticing I was getting harassed with messages, constant bulletins and quite frankly it was bothering me. I made the decision that I was going to block them from my friends list.

So I proceeded to click on there profile for the first time, a moment I wont, forget may I add. A huge sound passed through my small pc speakers and monitor. A soft broken melodic voice and piercing lead guitar followed. With nothing short of breath taking drumming! I couldn’t believe I had ignored this for so long! I was robbing myself of a brilliant experience! The tracks on the page where comparative to those of a certain Mr Lennon and McCartney and a Mr Davies.

Very raw very British and very catchy. Now I must say that I have removed myself from the current music scene, as quite frankly it is tripe! I spend my time listening to the Beatles, the Kinks, the Stones and any bands which have really stood the test of time! So I was quite taken a back by the ability of a small town unsigned band! So I did a little more digging, compared them to other local unsigned acts, nothing came close! This is why I urge you to listen to The Vouch. They are a 5 piece from extremely humble beginnings. They originate from Cannock which believe me is a place best wiped off the map, voted 5th worst place to live in the country!

Its a former mining town, and with no intention of offending people there, it has become a breeding ground for zombies born and breed to work underground. There music is often dreamy mixing facts with fiction to create a real experience, when listening! After really getting into the bands recordings I decided to make the journey to one of there live shows. They appear regularly at the Rock Cafe Cannock but this was not really a venue I wanted to visit. So on closer inspection of their gig guide I found a gig at the dirty south club London, the band had arranged coach travel. So I decided to get in touch and get down there. They where due to support a dj set from former oasis guitarist ‘Bonehead’, so I thought it would be a good night. The Day Of The Gig The coach arrived at 4 o’clock on a Saturday to pick us up from the dreaded ‘Cannock bus station’. I hoped on to find it full of drunken teenagers and thought what am I doing. I sat at the front alone for around an hour, before a chubby young lad introduced himself to me. He walked to the front of the coach, carling cans in hand one of which he passed to me, and said “Ort, I’m Beaver.” The trip on the coach took around 4 hours and was extremely wild, not for the faint hearted.

I felt really sorry for the coach driver!  I wanted to see if they really were the best band in the world, i think they certainly were the best band in cannock! We arrived in London at around 8.30pm local time and went into the venue. I was very surprised to see the band just instantly mingle with there friends and fans and drinks where exchanged immediately. Time slid by as I spent most of the time with my new acquaintances ,’Beaver’ , watching the other support acts. Several pints of Guiness later and toilet breaks, the band arrived on stage. With the front man and bass player tuning in to the dirty pretty things anthem ‘Bang Bang You’re Dead’. They immediately threw there instruments to the floor and jumped into the growing crowd to dance and……. well……… go metal really. Was this a ploy to create mayhem I’m unsure, but it did work! They took to the stage in a venue, that you wouldn’t imagine would have much of an atmosphere……. but they seemed to create there own. Track after track of exhilarating music, the crowd loving it, with some minor stage invasions. All in all I sum up that The Vouch are a must see! Josh Smithyman

After selling the M.I. Hummel line of Goebel figurines since 1935, Goebel shut its doors in October 2008. Problems began years before with the owner filing bankruptcy in 2006. The economic downturn had an effect on a company that had been in business since 1871. Although best known for their Hummel line of Goebel figurines many different artists produced drawings that Goebel figurines where fashioned after. Several types of porcelain figurines by artists like Charlot BYJ have had success and have value in today’s market, but their Hummel line of Goebel figurines were always their best selling and most loved figurines.

When Goebel shut down, 230 employees who worked in the Hummel factory lost their jobs. Not only the employees but collectors of the Hummel line of Goebel figurines were astonished and saddened. Collectors were emotional and believed there was no way that Goebel could stop producing the Hummel line. Goebel had tried everything they could think of to keep producing the line, even increasing production of the Hummels to make more revenue. However, this didn’t work and supply quickly outweighed demand.

In 2009 Hoechst Porcelain located near Frankfurt, Germany founded the firm Manufaktur Roedental and they acquired not only the copyrights to the Hummel line of Goebel figurines but also the production facilities. They have hired back many of the former craftsmen and production of these beautiful figurines is again underway. Since everything is still made by hand, one figurine can take up to twelve weeks to produce.

This year is the 100th anniversary of Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel’s birth (she is the artist whose drawings the figurines are modeled after) and the new company is hoping this will respark an interest in the pieces. Many new porcelain figurines are being produced for the occasion and hopefully the tradition of the Goebel figurines will be carried on.
